Degrees and Institutions: BA in History at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), BA in Art History at UCLA, MA in Caribbean and Latin American Studies at University Collge London (UCL)

Giovannna started studying Caribbean history during her undergraduate studies at UCLA, writing an honors thesis on artistic production in Haiti. She then researched 1930s-1940s Carnival practices in Trinidad and Tobago and the attempts of the colonial elite to censor them for her MA thesis. She is currently working on a dissertation about young Black Martinican women´s educational migration to France during the 1920s and 1930s, focusing on strategies to counter French colonial practices of exclusion and these women´s contributions to wider transnational networks as well as their homeland´s community.
