Jean Salas

Bio

Jean Salas is a Master’s student in History at Florida International University. His current research examines the cultural and ideological tensions within the United States military during the Cold War, particularly the coexistence of institutional anti-communism with the welfare-state-like benefits provided to service members and their families. His broader research interests include military history, Cold War culture, medieval Spanish history, and early modern European history. Salas holds a bachelor’s degree in History and Social Science Education from Florida International University and teaches AP European History at Coral Reef Senior High School. Before beginning his teaching career, he served as a musician in the United States Marine Corps from 2012 to 2016. He is also an Emmy Award–winning clarinetist who performs with the Miami Pixel Symphony and the Doral Symphony Orchestra and serves on the board of the FIUsion Community Band
