Giovanna Violi

Bio

Giovanna started studying Caribbean history during her undergraduate studies at UCLA, writing an honors thesis on artistic production in Haiti. She then produced a Master's thesis on the colonial elite's attempts to censor Carnival practices in Trinidad and Tobago in the 1930s and 1940s. She is currently working on a dissertation about young Black Martinican women's educational migration to France during the 1920s and 1930s, focusing on strategies to counter French colonial practices of exclusion and these women's contributions the formulation of decolonial citizenship in the post-WWII period.
