Internal Fellowships

The Department of History has instituted a number of fellowships to aid in your success.

  • Writing in History Undergraduate Essay Prize

    The Undergraduate Essay Contest is intended to recognize the quality research and scholarly writing of students in History courses at Florida International University. Essays should feature ​original research​, either based on primary source analysis, or engaging a historiographic debate, and should reflect the highest standards of scholarly work. They will be evaluated on subject knowledge, clarity of argument, engagement with source material, and significance to the field. Any ​current or recently graduated FIU undergraduate is eligible to submit a piece of historical scholarship written during the prior summer, fall, or spring semesters; applications are generally due annually immediately following the end of the spring semester.

    Prizes:

    • First Prize: $100 FIU Bookstore Credit 
    • Second Prize: $50 FIU Bookstore Credit 
    • Third Prize: $25 FIU Bookstore Credit 

    Instructions for applying: Entries may range from ​6-25 pages. They must be typed, double-spaced, and contain Chicago style citations, ​and include the applicant’s name, FIU email address, and the course name/number for which the essay was written. Send the paper to salondon@fiu.edu with the subject heading: “Writing in History Essay Prize Entry.”

  • History Launching Fellowship

    The History Launching fellowship of $200 is awarded to subsidize the application process to any graduate program (including humanities disciplines, like History, or non-humanities fields such as law, medicine, education, social work, etc). The award can also be used to offset the costs of the Florida Teacher Certificate Exams. Award distribution might take the form of a reimbursement or a stipend (with appropriate tax and other deductions). Final eligibility and timing of the disbursement are determined by the Office of Financial Aid. Applications are generally due annually during the Fall semester.

    Instructions for applying: Applicants submit a one-page description of post-graduation plans, addressing 1) what program(s) they are applying to and why 2) planned area of concentration, and 3) future career goals. They should also describe how the funds will be used and why they will be helpful. Entries must be typed and double-spaced and include your name and FIU email address. They should be sent to salondon@fiu.edu with the subject heading: “History Launching Entry.”

  • Chair's Undergraduate History Award
    The Department of History is pleased to announce the Spring 2025 competition for the Chair’s Undergraduate History Award. Traditionally supported by the Department Chair, the prize is awarded as an incentive for student research activities and outcomes. This year’s $200 Chair’s Undergraduate History Award will be split between the top two presenters at the Research Incubator Workshop. Awardees will be announced by March 19. 
    To apply and present at the Research Incubator Workshop, submit one page (250-300 max words) by Sunday, February 28, 2025, 11:59 PM EST to salondon@fiu.edu. Your one-page submission should: 
    1. Explain how participating in this workshop enhances your scholarship and/or professional development. 
    2. Offer background information about a primary source you are working with—It may be a source you just found, one you worked on or are working with for a course, a paper, a proposal, etc. 
    Entries must be typed and include your name and F.I.U. email address. Applicants selected as presenters will be asked to speak at the Research Incubator Workshop on Wednesday, March 12, 2025. Presentations will be 10 minutes long and will address the students’ analyses of their sources. Specifically, they will speak to context, interpretations, questions, and arguments related to their primary source. Email Dr. Sandra Londono if you have questions (salondon@fiu.edu).
  • Darden Pyron American Cultural History Fellowship

    The Darden Pyron American Cultural History Fellowship supports undergraduate or graduate research in history, especially American/Southern Cultural history, Queer history, and/or Biography. History majors or minors, and MA/PhD students in History, are invited to apply. The award of up to $350 can be used to cover research-related expenses, including non-electronic supplies, books, travel, data acquisition, and data transcription. Funds can cover research for a class project, offset the costs of an internship, or otherwise be used to fund a research endeavor. Applications are generally due annually during the spring semester.

    Instructions for applying: Applicants submit a proposal of approximately 250 words, a CV or resume, and a budget detailing how the funds will be used. Entries must be typed and double-spaced and include the applicant’s name and FIU email address. They should be sent to salondon@fiu.edu with the subject heading: “Darden Pyron Fellowship entry.”

    Submission Deadline: 11:59 PM EST, April 6, 2025

  • Henry J. Voegtle Fellowship on the History of Florida or Southern U.S.

    The Henry J. Voegtle Fellowship on the History of Florida or Southern U.S. supports research on the History of Florida and/or Southern U.S. History majors or minors, and MA/PhD students in History, are invited to apply. The award of up to $1,000 can be used to cover research related expenses, including non-electronic supplies, books, travel, data acquisition, and data transcription. The funds can cover research for a class project, offset the costs of an internship, or be used to fund a larger research endeavor. Applications are generally due annually during the spring semester.

    Instructions for applying: Applicants submit a one-page proposal describing the project, a CV or resume, and a budget detailing how the funds will be used. Entries must be typed and double-spaced and include the applicant’s name and FIU email address. They should be sent to salondon@fiu.edu with the subject heading: “Henry J. Voegtle Fellowship entry.” Awardees have six months from the time of notification to make use of the funds and one year to produce a one-page report describing research activities.

    Submission Deadline: 11:59 PM EST, April 6, 2025

  • The We Works New History Major Scholarship

    The We Works New History Major Scholarship offers $700, to be used for any purpose, to a declared major who has earned fewer than 75 credits in History. The Scholarship was established in 2024 for three cycles by the What If Works Theater Foundation, which champions arts for social change. It is designed to support academic excellence and creativity among students dedicated to studying the past.  Award distribution might be taken as a reimbursement or as a stipend (with appropriate tax and other deductions). Final eligibility and the timing of the disbursement are determined by the Office of Financial Aid. Applications are generally due annually during the spring semester.

    Instructions for applying: Applicants submit an unofficial transcript showing the declared major and total credits earned, along with a typed, double-spaced statement of 250 words or less explaining why they have declared History as a major. Entries must include the applicant’s name and FIU email address. They should be sent to salondon@fiu.edu with the subject heading: “We Works Scholarship entry.”

Any student who completes 4 upper-level history courses and has a 3.2 overall GPA can become a member of the national honor society Phi Alpha Theta.
