Many of us right now are struggling with issues more challenging than our coursework. Remember that the university is still functioning, although remotely, and has a lot of resources to support you both in and outside of the classroom. Visit FIU’s most comprehensive site for emergency help.

Make appointment with your advisor

You can communicate with your advisor through the Panther Success Network.

  1. Log onto MyFIU.
  2. Upon successful log-in, you will see your Student homepage. If it does not automatically load, select Student from the dropdown menu in the top center of the page
  3. Click on the Academic Advising tile
  4. Click on the Success Network tile
  5. Click on the Go to Panther Success Network button
  6. Finally, sign-in again using your FIU credentials

Once there you can message with your advisor, schedule/cancel appointments and more. Visit Panther Success Network for more tutorials.

Student support

  • Academic

    One of the best sites to support you as remote learners is the one created by the FIU's Green Library, with information not only on accessing the library’s materials and the assistance of librarians but also on free and low-cost WiFi access and laptops and hotspots available to borrow. You can visit the library’s remote learning site.

    The department's Writing in History Tutors are available to all students in history classes, for free one-on-one appointments, online or in person. They can help with papers, guide you as you approach research, work on study techniques for exams, and even offer suggestions on personal statements, cover letters, and graduate applications. They are a great resource.

    FIU's Center for Excellence in Writing offers writing support to students on the BBC, MMC, and engineering campuses, as well as online.

    Academic & Career Success (ACS) provides many student services to support you. Whether you’re looking for advising, career services, tutoring, or just a helping hand, they have you covered.

  • Disability resource

    The Disability Resource Center (DRC) provides support to students with short- and long-term disabilities. Speaking with the DRC can help you determine if you are eligible for accommodations, which professors cannot legally provide you without DRC documentation. Remember that just because you are eligible for accommodations does not mean that you need to use them. It is up to you to decide that, along with the professor of each of your courses.

  • Immigration

    The Department of History supports all of our diverse student population, including immigrants. For students with emergency legal issues related to immigration status, please contact Attorney Juan Carlos Gomez at the Carlos Alberto Costa Immigration and Human Rights clinic at FIU for free, confidential legal support.

  • Veterans

    Military veterans come to FIU with diverse service experiences and a variety of career goals but for many, the major could help pave the way for future success. According to a January 2017 article in Perspectives on History, “veterans can be more adept than the general population at thinking critically and appreciating the study of the past.”

    While veterans’ unique life experiences can enrich their perspectives on history, the skills they develop in history classes will serve them well in careers in a variety of fields. Courses on diverse people and cultures, war and society, health and medicine, and politics and policy allow students to hone their critical reading and analytical skills, as well as their written, oral, and digital communication abilities. They enhance as well students’ understandings of complex local and global contexts and change through time.

    The History major is particularly suited to veteran-students who aim to pursue careers in education and policy and government work. Faculty can work with students who are interested in pursuing career opportunities, for example, with Florida’s Troops to Teachers program and the federal government. They can also help guide students who are considering graduate school opportunities, including Masters and Doctoral programs in History and related fields, as well as medical and law school.

    Veteran and Military Affairs helps students navigate educational benefits available to them through the Department of Veterans’ Affairs and also helps them to make the most of their time as students, helping to ensure academic success. This office provides support for all Veterans, Active Duty, Reservists, eligible dependents and spouses enrolled at FIU.

  • Medical and emergencies

    Student Health and Wellness offers students free basic healthcare at the MMC and BBC campuses. They can also help students obtain free or reduced-cost prescription drugs and more extensive healthcare.

    Counseling and Psychological Services provide students with emergency and short-term counseling, including emergency appointments, and links students with programs and organizations that can them provide care over the long term. They have both BBC and MMC offices and a 24-hour emergency hotline: 305-348-3000.

    The Victim Empowerment Program provides support to students threatened with or victims of violence or abuse in a variety or forms, and those healing from such experiences. Although not a counseling center, they do provide some counseling and link students to counseling resources. They educate students on advocating for themselves and finding healthy solutions, as well as guiding them through the university and legal options of taking action against aggressors, as they are ready. They also link students to resources they need to improve their situation, such as emergency housing.

    Fostering Panther Pride offers assistance to students experiencing homelessness. They help students find on- or off-campus housing, navigate financial aid and other university policies, and link students to FIU and community resources providing academic and non-academic counseling, tutoring, and job placement.

    Student Food Pantry supplies free food to any currently enrolled student, no questions asked. They have BBC and MMC locations.
