Writing in History 2017– 2018 Undergraduate Essay Contest


The Writing in History Undergraduate Essay Contest is designed to recognize the quality research and scholarly writing of students in history courses at Florida International University.Any current undergraduate at Florida International University is eligible to submit a piece of historical scholarship written during the 2017-8 academic year. We encourage original research, either built on primary sources or engaging a historiographic debate, and the essays should reflect the highest standards of scholarly research and writing.

Entries must be typed, double-spaced, and range from 8-25 pages. In addition to Chicago Style citations, include your name, email address, and the course for which the essay was written. Finally, you must include a short (1-2 paragraph) abstract of the paper, explaining its central argument, method, and primary sources. Submit a digital copy of the paper to histutor@fiu.edu and to Dr. Micah Oelze at moelze@fiu.edu with the subject heading: “Writing Contest Entry.” Entries must be submitted no later than Friday, April 20, 2018.

Entries will be evaluated on subject knowledge, clarity of argument, engagement with source material, and significance to the field.

Prizes: First Prize: $75 gift card | Second Prize: $50 gift card | Third Prize: $25 gift card

Winners will also be considered for publication in The Atlantic Millennium, a graduate-student journal published by the Department of History’s Graduate Student Association.
