FIU Teams up with Historic Hampton House to tell the story of Music in Brownsville:

The Historic Hampton House received a major grant from the Knight Foundation Arts Challenge to bring to life the great musical heritage of the Hampton House and Miami’s Brownsville neighborhood. Through oral histories, exhibits and after school programs for area high school and middle school students, the Hampton House, working with the FIU History Department and the University of MiamiFrost School of Music, will be creating a comprehensive historical and music education program, the Brownsville Unity Music Project (BUMP). FIU graduate and undergraduate students, and faculty are planning a historical exhibition on the musical history of the Hampton House, a famous hotel for African Americans during the years of segregation. Many top African American musicians performed there, and some of the hotel’s famous guests included Martin Luther King Jr. and Muhammad Ali.
