Social Center of the South: The Past and Present of the Historic Hampton House
The Hampton House Motel & Villas was the South’s first luxury resort for African Americans and the most upscale facility for black travelers in South Florida during segregation. The Hampton House was renowned for its lounge where the biggest African American musical and comedy acts of the day performed for integrated audiences, including Aretha Franklin, Cannonball Adderley, Dizzy Gillespie, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Flip Wilson, James Brown, Marvin Gaye, Sarah Vaughan, Sam & Dave, Sammy Davis, Jr., and more!
The resort was also at the epicenter of cultural, political, and social change in Miami. One of the few venues in the South where blacks and whites were able to bridge the racial divide through music and social activism, it became a hub for the Congress of Racial Equality (C.O.R.E.) in the 1960s. Martin Luther King Jr., Muhammad Ali, and Malcolm X all stayed the Hampton House with their families on multiple occasions.
