Joseph Marin

Joseph Marin

Dr. Marin’s research interests include the history of capitalism, counterfeiting, and policing in Cincinnati, New Orleans, and the surrounding rural areas during the nineteenth century. His doctoral dissertation examined how two urban police departments pursued and arrested counterfeiters across municipal, state, and geographical lines that in turn, acted to pull the small towns and surrounding rural areas further into the city’s orbit. Lastly, Dr. Marin’s dissertation demonstrated that some rural areas along the Mississippi River in the Deep South supplemented weak local policing with vigilantism that attempted to deter counterfeiting through violent methods.
