Dr. Bianca Premo awarded an American Council of Learned Societies Fellowship

Dr. Bianca Premo has been awarded an American Council of Learned Societies Fellowship for her book project entitled The Smallest Subject. This book tells the story of the five-year old Peruvian girl who gave birth to a healthy son in 1939 and is still considered the youngest mother in the world. Dr. Premo hopes to unravel the history of twentieth-century of ethics and human subjects protocols from an intimate, accessible angle, even while pointing out how the larger international structure of medical imperialism—and its assumptions about race and gender-- shaped responses to this one individual’s pregnancy and life.
