At the beginning of the 2017 Latin American Studies Association Congress in Lima, FIU's History Department celebrated our longstanding connection to Peru. Our department has deep ties especially to the Pontifícia Universidad Católica del Perú, mainly fostered by Prof. Noble David Cook, who is retiring this year. The event gave everyone a chance to celebrate him and his monumental contributions to Peruvian history, as well as our continued intellectual connection to the country.
The event, organized by Dr. Miguel Costa (FIU PhD 2005), the Coordinador de la Especialidad de Historia at PUCP, was divided into three parts.
The first was a deep discussion of Prof. Bianca Premo's new book, The Enlightenment on Trial, with excellent commentary from PUCP student Luis Leyva and Dr. Judith Mansilla, who graduated from PUCP and went on to be named a World’s Ahead PhD in 2016.

Next, we boasted about our growing PhD program and the opportunities it provides especially to budding Latin American historians. PUCP has sent several of their brilliant students to get PhDs in History, including Miguel Costa, as well as Renzo Honores (PhD 2007), and Judith Mansilla (PhD 2016).

Finally, with tears, laughter, and a video compiled by Judith celebrating Dr. Cook with cameos by members of our DM family, we offered a moving tribute to David, whose dedication to Peru is only matched by his dedication to his colleagues and students here at FIU. David was honored with a gift delivered by Dr. Susan Reisz, Decana de la Facultad de Letras y Ciencias.
